How Much Space Do You Need for a Soft Play Party?

The question we get more than any other, usually a week before the party and usually with a photo of a backyard attached. Here are the real numbers, and what to do if your space is smaller than the setup you wanted.

The short answer

Little Explorer needs about 12 by 12 feet. Party Classic wants roughly 15 by 15. Deluxe Bounce and Grand Event need 20 by 20 or more once the bounce house and canopy are standing. Those figures are the play area itself, not including room for a table, a buffet or people standing around the edges.

How to measure without a tape measure

Walk it out. A comfortable adult stride is close to three feet, so twelve feet is four strides, fifteen is five, twenty is a little under seven. Do it in both directions from the corner where you want the setup to sit, and note anything that intrudes: a barbecue, a step down to a lower patio, a low branch, a sprinkler head.

The measurement that catches people out is height, not width. A bounce house needs genuine clear headroom, so a mature tree or a patio cover can rule it out even when the ground area is generous.

What the surface can be

Flat grass, artificial turf, patio, driveway and indoor flooring all work. We bring padded matting either way, so a hard surface is not a problem, and in some ways it is easier — matting sits flatter on concrete than on uneven lawn.

What does matter is level. A noticeable slope makes a ball pit migrate downhill over a couple of hours and makes a bounce house genuinely unsafe. If your yard slopes, tell us when you book and we will plan the layout around the flattest section rather than discovering it on the day.

When the space is tighter than the package

Three things usually solve it. Move to the smaller package — Little Explorer photographs just as well and is often the better fit for an under-three guest list anyway. Split the setup, putting the ball pit on the patio and the soft play on the lawn. Or drop the bounce house and keep everything else, which frees up more room than people expect.

Access matters as much as area

The play area can be perfect and the party can still go wrong at the side gate. Our largest ball pit needs a 32-inch clear opening to get through. Narrow gates, tight dog-legs between houses and flights of steps all add time, and steps in particular change the schedule considerably.

None of it is a dealbreaker if we know in advance. Measure your gate, count your steps, and mention both when you book.
