Soft Play or Bounce House? Choosing for Your Child's Age

Both get booked constantly and they suit genuinely different ages. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a party setup goes underused.

Soft play suits under-threes

Soft play — foam blocks, a ball pit, a mini slide, padded matting inside a fenced area — is designed for children who are crawling, cruising and newly walking. Everything is low, soft and enclosed, so a one-year-old can use it independently and a parent can stand at the fence rather than hovering.

It is also the better choice for mixed-age groups with babies present, because there is no minimum size or coordination requirement to join in.

Bounce houses suit three and up

A bounce house needs a child who can keep their feet under them among other moving children. Below about three, they tend to get knocked over by bigger kids and lose interest quickly.

Above three, it is the opposite: soft play alone can read as babyish to a five-year-old, and the bounce house is what holds them.

The mixed guest list

Most birthdays are not a single age. A three-year-old's party usually has a handful of babies and a few older cousins, and that is exactly the case for booking both — our Deluxe Bounce package pairs the full soft play set with a toddler bounce house so each group has somewhere that fits them.

Running both also spreads children out, which reduces the queueing and collisions that come from thirty children and one attraction.

Weather changes the answer

This is the practical difference people do not anticipate. Inflatables cannot run in sustained winds over 15 mph — a safety rule, not a preference — and coastal afternoons in Del Mar, Encinitas and La Jolla reach that more often than you would think.

Soft play and ball pits are unaffected by wind and can move indoors in minutes. If your date looks breezy, soft play is the resilient booking, and we would rather drop the bounce house on the day than lose the party.

Supervision is not the same

Soft play is genuinely low-supervision: fenced, padded and low to the ground. A bounce house needs an adult watching it whenever children are inside, sorting sizes and calling turns. For larger parties we include on-site attendants with Grand Event precisely so that job does not fall to you on your own child's birthday.
